A secret gem of a restaurant right in the middle of the Power Plant Mall.
Kulinarya Kitchen is one of my family's go-to places for special occasions or even for just plain satisfying our sporadic cravings for their delicious dishes. It's one of those restaurants where you will surely enjoy almost everything on the menu.
Most people aren't aware about it yet, albeit they are one of the mall's pioneers, having been in operation for about 13 years. But those in the know are pretty certain that this is one restaurant kept mum, yet very well-appreciated for the consistent high-quality food they serve. This precious little Makati secret, though, is slowly leaking out. With the rampant fervor for sharing secret food finds, Kulinarya Kitchen, is making its way through the different foodie circles, slowly and steadily. It's not for some hype nor is it some joint that's hip at the moment. As proven by the number of years it has been in service, Kulinarya Kitchen favors consistency and stability over a temporary spike in popularity.
Aside from both their classic and unique takes on different cuisines, I'd like to share with you some of their new dishes...
Tomato Bisque (P150); Garlic Shrimps and Pancetta Salad (P225 solo; P420 sharing)
The Tomato Bisque is a rich, warm pottage of summer tomatoes that perfectly satisfies my cravings for something savory when I'm quite hungry.
If you want something light and refreshing, their Garlic Shrimps and Pancetta Salad is worth a try. The interplay of butter and garlic amid the mustard celery seed dressing and balsamic glaze makes for an interesting combination of flavors.
Hot Cheese and Chorizo Dip (P395); Baked Brie with Walnuts and Raisins (P595)
Pure indulgence can be described of these two appetizers. Bubbling mozzarella cheese with smoky chorizo dip is already darn good on its own, yet try it with pulled roast beef, and see if you don't close your eyes in ecstasy. Salsa is also available for dipping, but I do prefer to pair it with the beef.
One whole baked brie sits under a heap of caramelized walnuts and raisins. Such opulence! Infused with orange zest and drizzled with honey, I prefer to eat it on its own and ignore the crackers and apple slices on the side.
Mushrooms and Ricotta Ravioli (P350); Wafu Steak Pasta (P250)
I have a penchant for raviolis, and this is no exception. Fresh mushroom ragout and ricotta cheese, what's not to love? I would have wanted more fillings in each piece; I simply couldn't get enough. And the sauce, ah the sauce, the truffle cream and brown butter combination is just utter bliss.
While I don't have a proclivity for sauceless pasta, whether it be oil-based or in this case, sauteed in garlic sesame soy reduction, I have to admit that its pairing with some tender Yakiniku style beef and shiitake mushrooms was a hit.
Cheesy Potatoes (P95); Surf and Turf (P895)
The Surf and Turf is one of their Family Platters that already comes with 2 side dishes. Among them---mashed potatoes, french fries, parsley butter rice, mushroom risotto, sesame noodles, buttered corn and carrots, etc.---the Cheesy Potatoes was my favorite, while the risotto comes in a close second. Chunks of potatoes covered with melted cheese and topped with bacon bits; be careful not to sate yourself with too much of this before trying out its main dish partner.
A platter of fork-tender roast beef drenched with red wine sauce and baked shrimps thermidor casserole make up the Surf and Turf. Think super soft meat that almost melts in your mouth, followed by such a robust, savory flavor of casserole, its rich cream just clinging to your palate, and you don't want to ever let go. Alternating between the two, it's hard to decide which I like better. Both are just so good!
Orange and Thyme Panna Cotta (P120); French Apple Tart (P175)
Another version of their popular Buco Pandan Panna Cotta, the orange and thyme tandem brings a sweet yet zesty taste on top of their creamy panna cotta.
The French Apple Tart easily makes it to my favorite dessert list simply because it isn't cloying at all in spite of the abundant salted caramel sauce occupying half of the dish. Or maybe it is the vanilla ice cream who stops it from being sickeningly saccharine. Whichever it is, I would love to order this dish again and again.
